Math Vocabulary Words with Examples and Pictures

Straight line– Draw a straight line across the top of the page.

Perpendicular– The two lines of bones are set perpendicular to one another.

Curve– He drew a line on the paper in a smooth curve.

Arc– The rainbow described an arc in the sky.

Circle– Draw a circle six centimetres in diameter.

Radius– We are measuring the radius of the circle.

Diameter– The diameter measures twice the radius.

Section– The architect drew the house in section.

Square– First of all, draw a square.


Rectangle–  He drew a rectangle on the blackboard.

Diagonal– The diagonal line forms the jabot effect.

Right triangle– A right triangle has a right angle.

Oval– Our table is oval in shape.

Center– A diameter passes through the center of a circle.

Whole– Two halves make a whole.

A half (1/2)– He kept a half of the cake for himself.

A quarter (1/4)– It’s about a page and a quarter.

Cube– How many faces does a cube have?

Cylinder– This is a cylinder.

Pyramid– He drew a pyramid.

Cone– Fold the paper to make the shape of a cone.

Parallel lines– There are three parallel lines.

Subtraction

– Example: “Three minus one equals two.” (3 – 1 = 2)
Multiplication

Division

Strict inequality
–  Read as: Is greater than

– Example: “Four is equal to three plus one.” (4 = 3 + 1)
Inequation
–  Read as: Is not equal to
– Example: “Four is not equal to three.” (4 ≠ 3)

Line Names with Examples and Pictures
